August Music Recap: Last Stat of the Summer

Summer is over, it’ll be fall soon, blah blah blah. This season was the perfect time to explore my music taste. However, this month was much different than others.

I’d been away for the majority of August, so now most of my recent posts revolve around my music recap. Which is fine, I guess. It’s sort of niche, it’s sort of iconic and camp of me? Especially since every post follows its own layout just like this one.

Speaking of camp, Not Another Teen Movie is super camp! I had the pleasure of watching it a few days ago and though it’s definitely R rated for a reason, it was the type of parody you just can’t find nowadays (in fact, the parody genre was basically killed entirely thanks to movies trying to emulate the same genius NATM and the Scary Movie series exhibited. They obviously failed and nobody bothered trying to return to the genre). I love satire so this was a fun watch. And obviously the soundtrack is pretty good. “I Melt with You” by Mest is a fun one, same with “Let’s Go” by The Cars. Two totally different genres and decades but they worked so well. The rest of the soundtrack is pretty quintessentially early 2000s alt rock/punk rock, which is not my favourite but I’ve slowly been liking some of it (just depends on the song, I did not like songs similar to “The Metro” by System Of A Down).

Otherwise, in terms of popular music, I have had Post Malone’s new album AUSTIN on repeat. The same few songs have been mixed in my Spotify queue, such as “Too Cool to Die”, “Buyer Beware”, “Texas Tea”, and “Overdrive”. I also enjoyed “Socialite” for the lines:

“You love someone for six weekends

And never talk to them again

Call it what you want

It’s such a tragedy”

But I just can’t stop thinking about that donkey line. Not going to lie, it’s pretty clever regardless of whatever face I made when I first heard it. It’s also a great conversation starter!

While I was away I went to a karaoke bar and listened to a British man sing Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell” and felt like I was watching Billy Idol (he was giving his all). So the past few weeks I’ve had that song on repeat, and I think that is probably his best song from what I’ve listened to so far (so I am slightly more biased than I already was).

And just for fun, here’s a list of some random songs I’ve been liking:

“Slipped Disc” -Lizzy Mercier Descloux

“Hometown Hero” -Cowgirl Clue

“Bisous” -Aya Nakamura

“Gem” -Romeo + Juliet

After reviewing my stats across three different platforms (Recieptify, Lastfm, and Obscurify) I’m actually a bit surprised. I didn’t listen to as much music as I usually do because I didn’t have time, but I think that actually skewed the results. Certain genres are considered most listened to even if I just listened to a couple of songs from it. According to Receiptify I listened to a lot of DFW rap, but I can’t recall any specific rapper associated with this genre! So I have no idea who falls under that regardless of how obscure it is. I also listened to a lot of slap house? I think Cowgirl Clue falls under this, but this is the first time I’ve heard of this genre as well. Obscurify says my current taste is 15% more electronic than usual, (it’s usually 10.4% more electronic anyway) which is quite a lot. My all time taste is 5.6% happier, but currently is 1.6% sadder. It’s 6.2% more energetic while usually it’s 1.5% less. The sites have gone wonky!

This all shows how extremely my listening habits have affected this post. Still, it’s important information to have and interesting to see how statistics can change so easily. My stats could have looked very different otherwise. However, I will say that I would have recommended most of these songs and artists anyway, but the post itself would have been centered around a different theme. I’m going to predict that September will be more interesting, the theme might be about obscurity.
