Music of May: What was I listening to?

Monthly Recap of Songs and Artists I’ve Listened to Before Spotify Wrapped Gets a Chance to Tell Me!

As an average enjoyer of music, I try my best to be open-minded when it comes to exploring the depths of Spotify’s recommended playlists. Personally, if the song is off-beat and generally strays from what is expected based on its genre, be it through production or the way the artist’s voice sounds, I will probably give it a chance and have it on repeat for at least a week if I like it enough.

With that said, my main playlists are always quite lengthy and it’s hard to create a particular mood from only a handful of songs, especially if they’re played on repeat. I could give the batch a new and generic name, but I know they’ll be replaced soon enough.

So I decided to see to list them off here to “declutter” and see if that would help. Idk something new I’m trying I guess! lol

Perhaps next month I will change the theme or do something similar, we’ll see!

Here’s what I’ve been listening to:

Alternative indie:

Some of these songs aren’t particularly new, but they are standouts in my playlist for various reasons. The Last Dinner Party has suddenly gained a lot of traction recently and they’ve only released one song which is incredibly impressive! It’s provocative in lyrics, but otherwise the melody has been compared to popular modern rock with some unique changes. CRITTER doesn’t have a similar high following, but their music definitely deserves more listens—vibrant and creative, HAVE SAFE B FUN is peak indie and their lead singer, Quinn Barnitt, is popular for her solo music. Her music is known for its intimate, earthy lyricism and unique tonality (she is most popular for the song “touch tank”). I hope to hear more from the duo because there’s a lot of potential (embarrassingly, I didn’t even realize Quinn and Quinnie were the same person until much later).

“Someone, Someone Real” Nick Wagen & crêpe girl

“Corner Babe” Babe Corner

“Nothing Matters” The Last Dinner Party

“PFC” CRITTER

“D*ckhard/Rockstar” CRITTER

“no way out” Ivri

“Bruise” BETWEEN FRIENDS

“i always had a thing for you” BETWEEN FRIENDS

French Hip Hop:

I like listening to a lot of French rap! Currently, I really like Meryl for her girlbossing and Gambi has recently released a couple singles; it’d been a while since I’d heard new music from him. Obviously they weren’t disappointing and I’m excited for a potential future album!

“Purple” Naps & Gambi

“GUETTE” Gambi

“Coucou” Meryl

“Ghost” Meryl

Electronic/Dance:

EDM can be fun! These are what I play in the car because it’s got a bass boost and these songs obviously emphasize the bass. They make mundane car trips a little more enjoyable! With all the head bumping I still make sure it’s not too loud for safety and tinnitus reasons.

“Nudista Mundial ’89” Alan Palomo ft. Mac DeMarco

“Chills” Tiësto & A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie

“Alive” Black Eyed Peas

Spanish/Latin:

Gradually, the weather’s getting warmer and summer’s fast approaching, so that means going back to some Latin hits! At the moment my top artist for this section would likely be Queen Shakira. Her shocking split manifested “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions Vol.53” which should definitely be added to your playlist if you haven’t done that yet. It’s not her most memorable melodically (other songs just play in my head when I try to remember it) but the lyrics…major yikes for her ex, she successfully dragged him through the dirt! I definitely want to see how she’ll explore similar emotions and in what direction future music will go.

“Eso Beso” Paul Anka (only some of it is in Spanish–like the title mostly–but I still think it should count!)

“Reggaeton” J Balvin

“BESO” ROSALÍA & Rauw Alejandro

“Loba” Shakira

Something new I found and is now in my ‘extra’ folder:

My extra folder is where stuff that heavily deviates from my regular genres goes. I usually won’t move it out of there but once in a while I’ll play something if I’m looking for a break from my latest listening binge. Most international music goes here.

Altin Gün is a group from Amsterdam that I recently found. They make Turkish psychedelic folk music and it has a distinct ’60-70s feel. Even the art for their new album Aşk matches the music. I know basically 0 Turkish but I like the vibes and I think that’s what matters most! Also Google Translate exists if you’re really curious, so I might translate the lyrics at some point if I feel like it.

That’s some of what I’m listening to right now. According to Obscurify my songs are generally very high in energy and are also becoming happier, a recent spike since I last checked a few weeks ago. What I listen to definitely fluctuates and these stats will probably change next month!

This was my recap, maybe you’ll like these if you go and listen. Yes I will want credit if you plan to tell your friends you found these songs. No I will not hold it against you if you ‘accidentally’ forget.

HERE’S A CLAPPING FUNCTION. CLAP!! I INSIST:

The Field of Forget-me-nots

The Field of Forget-me-nots, an original poem:

Forget-me-nots.

As long as my memories can be souvenirs.

Untouched forget-me-nots I pick at whim.

You’re fixated, unintentionally, by monotony,

until one day the rush of trivial details and sentiments,

so delicate and sometimes fraudulent,

ask you to revisit what they meant to you.

And you’re left bemused because you can’t conjure a thoughtful answer,

especially when time is running a mile ahead of you.

Because in the early days you feel like you can

either live with the inconspicuous and fleeting moments,

have them in your pocket to experience over and over again

like a drug with no form in the physical world,

Or you tuck them in the same pocket, and toss the pants in a corner

you’ll forget about.

Then you can feel the same way again in a decade or so

when the pants might not fit anymore.

So you ask yourself

if your fear is worth anything,

if you want something out of it in the end,

if you’d like to be remembered.

Meticulous choosing and picking can grow tiresome, after all.

Because people will laugh at the innocence of your doings,

especially when you don’t know any better,

when you don’t realize it,

when you won’t have them anymore.

And like the forget-me-not you only wish your memory could serve you

for as long as you require.

But you’re bound to settle for something less.
